It was late in the afternoon when Tally made it back to the stables for half an hour or so, dragging Darren with her and silently thanking her lucky stars that she had had the foresight to mix as many feeds as she had the buckets for a day in advance. They didn't have much time to distribute them, and she was always short of staff on the weekend; it was only to be expected that she couldn't find anyone to come in and feed for her. Selena's wedding seemed to have been strategically planned to interfere with all her normal routine except morning workouts - just as she was every morning, Selena had been there at 3am sharp, struggling to tame her wild red curls long enough to tie them back out of her face. Apparently the thought of taking a day off for her wedding had not even occurred to her.
"I'll take the east side, and you do the west?" Darren suggested, unlocking the padlock on the gates that guarded the stable entrance. With horses like Eidolon and Vanquished hidden inside the many rows, you couldn't be too careful about keeping nosy people out of the place.
"Sure thing," Tally replied, breaking her own rules and entering the stable still in her dress, having changed only her shoes on the way. Normally, no loose clothing like dresses was allowed in the stables, but in an emergency situation - well, she might as well. She headed straight for the feed room to the right, leaving Darren to jog away between rows to the second feed room on the other side of the stables - another rule broken, but who was counting? The feeds had been sorted into two halves to make it more manageable, and sat stacked into piles on a huge trolley.
Dragging the trolley out of the room, Tally set to the feedings, moving to Nattie's stall first. Sunshine Notes, read a shiny brass plate on the stall door. '08 StyCh F. Cobalt x Watch The Clock. The filly pretended to not even notice Tally's presence as she swung the bucket over the door and tipped the feed into the bin hanging just next to the door, the chestnut only moving to eat once the trainer had moved on to the next stall. Nattie had always been like that though, for as long as Tally had owned her. She had been bought from Flat Creek as a yearling who showed some potential, though she had yet to actually win a race. Flat Creek had gone quiet since then, with fewer runners at meets and much less attention in the media. Tally hadn't had a chance to seek out John or Lynn or really anyone in the past few months, kept busy by her own horses and the madness surrounding Eidolon after her Treble win; she knew they had been invited to the wedding, and had been hoping to see them there, but hadn't caught a glimpse of them in the crowds yet.
Working quickly, she made it through about 20 horses in no time at all, reaching Eidolon's stall. The talented three year old swung her head over the door to lip at Tally's hair as she picked up the bucket of feed, earning herself a pat as feed was tipped into her bin. What else had been happening? There had been plenty of unwanted media attention lately, surrounding the end of year awards and Eidolon's sudden rise to greatness after struggling in her first few races, and of course the controversy that had been caused by her and Vanquished both running in the Snowman Sprint. Eidolon had won, surprisingly; to tell the truth, Tally had though that her older sibling was the stronger of the two, considering Echo had been a mere two years old and barely started in her career. But since finding her feet, the filly had proceeded to grind every horse she faced into the dust, with eight consecutive wins.
Then of course, there had been the pile of forms that had been required for her seventeen entries into the spring mixed auctions. It had been quite heartbreaking consigning several of those horses - especially Autumn Spell, Sola's first colt who finally seemed to be shaping up into a nice little racer and stud prospect - but they were all necessary. All her consignments were horses that required more time than she had to put into them, broodmares that she just couldn't find the right matches for. They would do well in other homes. The paperwork though, it had had her snowed under for weeks, along with everything else she had to get done in a day, and she was more than happy to see the end of it, and the end of the madness. Selena's wedding was, she hoped, the beginning of everything returning to normal, daily routine.
It had been a busy few months indeed.
