[bg=black][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,400,true] Scott & Hoist the colours, Trevor & Keegan, Lee, Mike
Scott and Trevor lead Holly and Keegan into the stable yard slowly, mindful of the injured back leg as Keegan limped along. Scott stopped the closest groom by grabbing his arm. Run and get Mike and Lee. He ordered, before halting Holly and Keegan. Trevor, go tend to Holly. I’ll deal with Keegan. He ordered the younger man, who hesitated for a moment before nodding and trading reins with Scott. Scott sighed as he watched Trevor move off with the mare, and turned to the overo colt. Easy boy. He whispered, stroking his neck.
It didn’t take long before Lee and Mike came running into the stable yard, halting beside him. Mike didn’t hesitate to crouch beside the swollen leg the colt was favoring. What happened? He barked, glancing at the jockey. We were working them for six furlongs, and he was fine. I noticed the limp when we were heading back to the exit and made Trevor pull him up. I checked his leg and it was swollen and hot so we walked them here. Mike nodded as he ran his hands over the leg, letting the colt pull it up when he touched the sore spot. Lee, call the vet. Probably sprained a tendon or worse case a broken bone…but we need an X-ray to be sure. Lee nodded and moved off towards the office.
Mike sighed as he stood up, patting the colts hindquarters before turning to Scott. Where is Trevor? He asked, glancing towards the stable. Putting Holly up. He didn’t do anything wrong Mike. Scott defended, keeping a hold on Keegans reins. I know, probably just a misstep. Happens more often than you’d think. I just don’t want the boy to blame himself. Mike soothed the jockey, patting his shoulder. Scott nodded and released a breath as Lee came out. He should be here in five-ten minutes. She reported before turning to Scott. Trevor? Scott nodded towards the stable With Holly. Lee nodded and patted his shoulder before heading into the barn.
Trevor? Lee called and saw the young jockey peek out of Hollys stall. She walked down and leaned on the stall, peering in. Ma’am. I didn’t mean for him to get hurt. I didn’t even know till- Lee raised her hand to cut him off. Its alright Trevor. It’s a known risk in the racing business. Scott said you didn’t do anything wrong. Once you’re finished with Holly come on out. Vet should be here in ten minutes. Trevor nodded and Lee smiled slightly before heading back out to wait for the vet.
It was five more minutes before Trevor joined them and Scott nodded towards him. Trevor, come over here. Mike ordered, and Trevor approached slowly. Come down here. he continued, from where he was crouched near Keegans leg. Mike lifted the leg from the bucket of ice water he’d been resting it in. Trevor did as he was ordered and shot a confused look at Mike. Run your hands gently over his leg Trevor did so Feel how its swollen and hot? Mike asked when Trevor pulled his hands back. Yes Trevor answered softly. That’s a sign somethings wrong. You pulled him up as soon as you could and took it slow getting home. Now most likely he took a wrong step, and I just wanted you to know it wasn’t your fault. Incidents like this happen, and we deal with them. Lee has always put the health of her horses before the wins they get. Now when the vet gets here we’ll find out how bad it is. But remember, this isn’t your fault. Mike insisted, watching as Trevor nodded slowly. Good. Mike said, standing up just as the vets truck pulled in.
Both watched as he pulled out his mobile x-ray machine as well as the mobile ultrasound and walked over. Ah good, you put his leg in ice water. Good good. We’ll start with the x-ray to make sure he didn’t break or fracture his leg. If he hasn’t we’ll check to see how back hes strained the tendon. John said. Lee nodded and watched as the vet maneuvered around Keegan, setting up the x-ray machine and taking several x-rays. Once that was done he looked at the results on his computer and frowned. Well it isn’t broken or fractured
He put the x-ray machine away and repeated the method of setting up the ultrasound, gently scanning over the leg while Mike held Keegan steady. A frown appeared on Johns face and he shook his head, glancing at Lee. Well he’s strained it. Its not as bad as it could be, but its not the best I’ve seen. Mike you know how to treat a strained tendon? The trainer nodded. Good, do that for at least a week and keep him in his stall for sixty five days. I’ll be back to check on him then. Make sure you keep it wrapped and give him the anti-inflammatory I’m gonna give you, once a day. Lee nodded as John put everything away. Uh..what caused it? Trevor asked softly and John turned. He mis-stepped son. Happens all the time. Trevor nodded and breathed out a soft sigh. John handed Lee the anti-inflammatory and shook her hand before helping Mike wrap the leg. Good luck guys. Thanks John. Mike and Lee said at the same time.
