Dev & Josh Passit, Dolly & Austin Smith
Josh sighed as the groom led the blue roan colt out, ears pinned, attempting to bite poor Adam. Adam was the most experienced groom at Flat Creek, and even he couldn't handle the son of Daemon and Watch The Clock. Why they didn't veld the menace was beyond him. Flat Creek had plenty of Daemon blood already. Sure, they could miss out on a nice stud prospect if he became a good runner, but he had lots of siblings to fill that void.
Josh took the colt fromAdam and led him over to Lynn and John, where Austin was waiting with Dolly. The mare was well bred, but had only shown a flash or two of talent. Her last race had been a breakthrough, when she had beaten the Ferndale two year old He's A Pirate, handing him his first defeat in his short career. Even with that, Josh doubted that Dolly could beat Dev in this workout.
John, seeing Josh and Dev, nodded and started to talk. "Go a mile gallop, then breeze seven furlongs at an easy twelve-second clip. Gates, like usual. Questions?" Josh and Austin shook their heads and hopped up on their mounts. Dev shook his head and snorted, warning Josh. The two riders walked the horses out of the barn and to the turf track. It was late morning, with few horses on the track. At the sight of the blue roan colt, many of them left. Everyone had heard the stories about Dev and nobody wanted to get their horse hurt. The colt in question had his head up, his usual kingly stride and ears pinned. Dolly looked around with ears pricked, the energy filled mare wanting to run.
The two horses picked up an easy gallop, moving easily over the turf. For now, Dev was content to run, ignoring the roan mare at his side. They ran like that for a mile, a good warm up for their approaching work. Josh eased down on Dev, Austin following suit. They jogged towards the gates, Austin and Dolly leading the way, ready for one of Dev's infamous Dev-fits. The blue roan was fine until they got close to the gates and he realized what was going on. Dev balked and when that didn't work, reared and started a Dev-fit. Josh slowly inched the colt towards the gates. They had already loaded Dolly, who had walked in like a pro. After several minutes of bucking and rearing, the assistant starters finally got Dev in. Before they opened the gates, Dev pushed through, Dolly following with a surprised Austin. Josh had lost his irons when Dev had made his false start and when the colt stumbled he flew off.
Josh hopped up quickly, fine, but further down the track Austin was struggling to slow Dolly down. Dev was hurtling down the track with ears pinned and eyes rolling, biting at Dolly. The roan mare was covered in sweat, with blood on her neck. After about a half mile, the pair of roans slowed and they were able to catch Dev. Austin jumped off of Dolly as soon as she stopped. John, Lynn, and two of the grooms ran over to check the horses. "She's favoring that right fore, John," said Austin as soon as John reached the mare.
"We'll get her taken care of. Are you okay, Josh? That was a nasty fall." replied John. Josh nodded. "I'm fine. We need to get these two to the barn and get the vet out her. Don't worry about me." John nodded, then led the way back to the barn, looking over at Lynn and telling her to call the vet.
By the time that they had made their way back to the barn, the vet was waiting for them. John looked over at Adam, who was struggling to hold Dev. "Get him cooled out. We'll have the doc take a look at him later." Adam nodded and waved over a couple of scared looking grooms. John turned to the vet and explained what happened as the vet took out his x-ray machine.
After taking his pictures, Brian brought them over. "I've found your problem." He pointed at a spot in the x-ray. "This sesamoid here is shattered. I'd like to have her in at the clinic til it's healed and we get her surgery done. She'll be good to be bred next season, though." John sighed. "There's no hope of getting her back to the track?" Brian shook his head. "No, I'm sorry." John nodded, then said. "Thanks for coming out here." Brian nodded and shook hands. "We'll get her fixed up for you."
