Lucy sighed as she headed off towards the barn. All of this was brand new. She had never owned a horse of her own let alone two horses. She patted her frizzy red hair and tucked in her white shirt. Inheriting two horses from her aunt was completely shocking and she had no idea if she was any good at it, but hey, Lucy promised to do her best. And boy, was she going to regret it. The moment the pale girl entered the barn she just knew she was going to have her hands full. Little Girl, named after Lucy's mother, was a feisty trickster who could never leave anything well enough alone. It was 5:30 in the morning and she was already out of her stall and pestering every horse in the stable, most of all Sultan. Normally, Little Girl wouldn't bother any horse larger than herself. Despite being a bit of a biter and rather stubborn, Little Girl wasn't dumb enough to mess with another horse that could easily hurt her. But, having a fairly strong gate between them was a good enough okay for her to start tormenting him.
"LITTLE GIRL!" Lucy screeched as the chestnut mare reared, completely surprised by the small woman's outburst.
It was a wonderful thing that Sultan was the better of the two horses. At least Lucy was only going to have one problem child on her hands. Sultan's brown eyes met her hazel ones with a tiny bit of excitement. Apparently, the charcoal colored stallion was completely unaffected by the mare's taunts. Lucy's hand went straight to her face, she slowly shook her head, and then sighed. How could she stay mad at Little Girl when Sultan was giving her such a look? As she slowly reached out for the lead rope, Little Girl backed away. She wasn't going to make any of this easy. The first thing that they were going to have to work on was discipline.
Lucy hooked one of the lead ropes onto Sultan's halter and led him out of his stall. She then gave him a piece of apple she had cut up earlier. Little Girl's ears perked up at the sight of a snack. She moved forward slowly, but then stopped when Lucy moved her left arm, that was holding the second led rope, behind her back. The chestnut mare moved closer and closer, suspiciously eying the red head with each step. Once in range, Lucy swung her arm around and hooked the rope to the halter. Little Girl snorted and pawed the ground angrily. No one was going to lead her anywhere without a fight! No matter how much Lucy pulled and pulled, the mare wasn't going to follow so she flashed the apple again. That got her going. With a sigh of relief, the pale woman led the two out to the practice track. This was going to be a very long day. Sultan would be able to go a few times around the track, but Lucy would be lucky if she could even get on Little Girl. The apples were going to come in handy.
