Juveniles
The two year olds are back and raring to go for the second meet of the year. In the first race a turf distance, Flat Creeks Gladly Abroad swept the field with a three length win, followed by King Parks Spirit Line who was only a neck length lead in front of returning Ferndale Farms, Don't Speak. Don't Speaks stable mate A Hero Comes home was a length behind and when we spoke to trainer Mike, he said this was Heros last race since she suffered a kick by stablemate Phantom menace and it resulted in a broken leg. The vet reports she won't be raceable. A sorrowsome day for Hero is the daughter of Hall of famer, Daemon.
The second race on the card was a dirt sprint. Only two horses were in this race, King Parks Sunshine Notes won by a four length lead over Flat Creeks Devil's Book. Shortly after this match race like maiden, another ran. This one was a Turf Distance and was yet another match race like maiden between Kings Park and Flat Creek horses. Once again Kings Park horse proved superior, Zen master winning a neck length over Always A Challenge.
Our Solemn Life caused a disturbance on post parade when he broke away from his lead pony and bolted down the track towards the gate. Our Solemn Life is the son of A dogs life and Our Solemn Hour, a lightly raced mare. Many thought perhaps Ferndale would scratch him after this stunt, however their vet checked him over and he was allowed to run. Despite his earlier burst of speed, Life managed to come out ahead of the pack by a length to win this turf sprint.
Back again for her second maiden race, Eidolon was pitted against Challenger son, Parlay. For the first several furlongs they were the perfect pair, plowing down the track in the lead. However as they turned for home Eidolon began to drop back, allowing both Flat creek horses to pass her. Parlay managed to hold onto the lead by half a length with Break the east on his tail.
Grade III
Still fresh from his return, Ferndales He's A Pirate seems to be determined to prove he is better than his half brother. With his third appearance since his return, this time in the Eldenburg Cup. He's A Pirate decimated the field with a six length lead between him and Flat Creeks Orao Ribar. He's A Pirate stable mate The Covenant managed to snag third, fleeing from Devil I Am who came in fourth.
In the Vaughn Memorial Alphabet Falls and Forceful battled it out despite being stablemates. However in the end it was Alphabet Falls who won. Alphabet Falls is sired by Alphabet and half sister to Eastern Elements a Grade II from Ferndale Farms who was bred by Kings Park.
Uncarded
In the Wold Handicap Eastern Elements proved that despite her break, and older age she still has it. Leading the field with a two length lead over stable mate Banshee, who was followed closely by King Parks Diamond Clock.
An upset in the Millenium Plate stakes caused spectators to wonder if A Thrush's Song was holding back before. With 31 starts to his record and only 5 wins, fans began to question his previous jockies when he opened up a half length lead on favorite He's A Pirate. When questioned about it Ferndale replied that every horse has its day, and that today was just A Thrush's songs day. He's A Pirates half brother another Flat Creek horse, Devil I Am trailed his brother by two lengths.
Yet another upset in the uncarded races. In the Finalised new to the track Princess Diamond managed to out class all the other horses and sweep the win from under them. This grey filly is a nominee for champion two year old, and managed to beat horses such as Autumn Spell, Unsung Hero, Freddy Krueger and Pioneer. Apparently this new face is more than just a pretty face in the crowd. I dunno about you, but this reporter will be keeping an eye on Princess Diamond.
Features
In the Hollinsworth Stakes it was Flat Creek who dominated the racing field with several horses. Out of these Mindset managed to snag the win by a nose from stablemate Wand hand. The Wild Life, yet another Flat Creek horse managed third, two lengths ahead of Ferndales Keegan. Sadly King Parks Vanquished placed out of the money, trailing at the end of the pack. She gave them a good run about half way through, but it seems that she couldn't make it.
In the ADT Handicap Ferndales returning horses continue to prove that despite their break from the track they are still great. Tuarwen, who is sired by The White Fox and Out of Dro, as well as half sister to Animal Kingdom managed to snag the win from King Parks Wonder by a neck. Flat Creeks Rocket Away was a length behind them to take third followed by stable mate Conquistador.
