Sarah yawned as she sat outside the stall containing the champion broodmare Devil's Food. The mare and her first daughter were both due to foal any day and it was her turn to be on foal watch, with Josh. Josh was standing outside Rissy's stall, peering in at the gray mare. "I really think she's going to drop it tonight, Sarah," he called quietly over, his voice soft so as not to disturb any of the mares. Sarah looked over at him. "Stop worrying, she'll be fine. You need to go take a nap or something, since it's still early. I'll keep watch." Josh looked at Rissy, then back at Sarah, "But I need..." Sarah shook her head. "Go now. I don't want to see you out here until midnight." Josh shook his head and walked the way Sarah had pointed. She grinned, then stood up and looked in on all of the broodmares. Blue Skies had foaled last night, and In The Distance the day before that. All of them were doing well.
Sarah woke with a start, huridly looking at the watch and seeing that it was nearly midnight. She rose from her chair, legs stiff, and wobbled over to Devil's stall. To her surprise, there was a bay filly that was decent sized just wobbling to her feet. She glanced around the stall, making sure everything had gone well, then slipped down the aisle to Rissy's stall. The gray mare's coat had darkened with sweat, but nothing appeared to be in the stall with her, until the mare took a few steps towards Sarah, revealing a big bay colt. She watched him nurse for a moment, then walked back down to Devil's stall to check in on the full sister to Rissy.
The filly was nursing fericly, wobbling slightly on newborn legs. Once sure everything was fine, she hurried over to the office, opening the door to Josh who was still awake. "Did she have it?" Sarah couldn't help but laugh at his hurried question. "A big bay colt, looks like he will gray out. That's not the only surprise, though. Devil had a filly. Everyone's fine."
In the morning, John found the two fussing over the new foals, Josh being taken with the filly and Sarah fussing over the big colt. "Well, looks like they decided to have their babies on the same night, didn't they?" John called out as he entered the barn. Sarah stood up, nodding. "Yep, about the same time, too. Are we going with the planned names, then?" John nodded. "Yes, Amazon and Skyrocket." Sarah grinned. She had thought of Skyrocket for Rissy's foal, noting that it fit with his sire and dam's names perfectly. "Well, then, little Bullet," she crooned to the baby. He had his nose sticking through the mesh on his door, eyes curious and bright. Over in the next stall, little Amazon was nursing. Devil, used to foals, with her final one soon approaching, was standing drowsly, eyes drooping. "Amazon and Skyrocket, the next superstars from Flat Creek," whispered Josh, watching the two foals."
