With the running of the first maidens of the year has come a snapshot at what the year is shaping up to be, particularly in the two year old division. The first pick of the lot is Wand Hand, a filly by popular stud and winner of Sire of the Year, Spellbreaker, and out of Watch the Clock, a semi-successful racer. Owned and trained by Flat Creek Racing, Wand Hand was quite a scene in her debut, odds plummeting the moment she stepped onto the track and she did not disappoint with a two and half length victory over Just Imagine. Her new-found fans will be eager to see what she can do against older horses, and a possible start in juvenile Features later in the year.
Another performance worth noting is from the before-unheard of Black Magic. A late entry, this striking black colt towered over his competition in the post parade despite the little attention he was given in the betting and pulled off a surprising move to beat down solid prospects from larger stables and take the win. Owned by Black Snow Stables, a relatively new establishment in the area, and from little-known bloodlines, people are already calling this black colt the next Challenger or Daemon and with a three length win over Thatswhenyoushine of King's Park, who knows what this colt will do next.
One new-comer who is not to be ignored is Autumn Spell, the third Autumn Fun foal to race. This colt has so far been ignored by the public but certainly turned heads today with a bold coat and even bolder run, beating off stablemate Goodbye Birdy for a first-up win. By popular and successful stud Spellbreaker, Autumn Fun has been marked down as a definite Feature contender in the future.
The second King's Park juvenile of note is the aptly-named Wonder, a very gentle filly sho also happens to be a full sister to the mildly successful Sails Abroad (Tambourine x Coursette). This chestnut didn't look like she would be much of a threat in the post parade, seeming more interested in meeting the crowd than running a race. Despite this, she was an instant favourite with the ladies, her odds dropping right before post time, and she had captured the entire crowd's hearts by the end of her race, skipping right to the front from the gates and never looking back. Though currently racing in turf sprints, there is speculation that this filly might just be good enough for the Treble.
The final eye-catcher in this years juveniles is Honoured Bravery, who ran a similar race to Wonder in the distance division and was simply too far in front to be caught. The crowd is always on the lookout for possible Treble contenders, and this son of Syllable and Laugh It Off may just be it. Owned by Flat Creek Racing, a stable known for their excellent turf distance horses, Honoured Bravery will be eagerly awaited in his first start against open company.
