HORSE OF THE YEAR
EASTERN ELEMENTS Eastern Elements exploded onto the track in her debut this year, winning her maiden by two lengths and quickly establishing herself as one of the top sprinters around. A filly by well-known stallion Alphabetical and out of Eastern Expression, this two year old has proven that bloodlines aren't everything, winning all seven of her starts this year including four Features. Bred by King's Park Racing, Eastern Elements is proudly owned and trained by Lee Mulligan of Ferndale Farms, and has brought them much success with wins in the Run For The Diamonds for two year olds, the Open Summer Turf Sprint, and GIII Briny Cup and ADT Handicap.
Eastern Elements is expected to return for an equally successful career as a three year old, and will likely be aiming for the GII Run For The Roses, among other Features.
CHAMPION TWO YEAR OLD
ANIMAL KINGDOM Another outstanding two year old from Ferndale Farms, Animal Kingdom was a force to be reckoned with as he broke maiden in his first race with a substantial lead. He fared a little worse against the older horses, with two places and a show to his name, gaining experience in time for the Treble, and swept away the field in the first two legs before a thorough defeat in the Hope Plate that ended his career and hopes of following in the footsteps of Skyward for this year. Animal Kingdom finished the season with a total of 8 starts for three wins, two placings and one show, and will be returning for his three year old season after a short spell.
CHAMPION THREE YEAR OLD
EASTERN EXPRESSION A three year old bay colt bred and trained by King's Park Racing, Eastern Expression stepped up his game this season with impressive performances in each and every race and only four placings worse than third.
Though he only had one win this year, it came in the form of the Feature-rated Just Memories Stakes, a clean victory over some of the best around. His other Feature performances ended in placings in the Summer Stakes and Green Isle Cup, both Open races.
Eastern Expression also contested the Virtuity Treble again this year, his performance in the three prestigious legs improving drastically from his two year old season, resulting in shows in the first two legs and a placing behind stablemate March to Glory in the final leg, the Hope Plate.
CHAMPION OLDER MALE
CONSTELLATION Champion distance runner Constellation of King's Park Racing finally made it into GII territory this year, running against some of the best around in several races. He finished the year overall with 6 wins from 11 starts, bringing his total record to 11 from 25, and his total of Feature victories to a whopping 6.
The grulla sabino son of Sire of the Year Zynco and unraced mare ByeByeBirdy was on form right from the start, flying away from the field to take out his first start in style, the GIII Solo Plate. From there, he earned a show in the Open division and failed to place in the Green Isle Handicap but brought it back in time for the Green Isle Cup, a victory that also brought him to GII status. Soon after, he claimed the Fly Away Handicap, a place in the Sloth Stakes, and his final three wins for the season in the open Reload Stakes, GII Feature, the Summer Mile, and Open-rated Summer Stakes.
CHAMPION OLDER FEMALE
STARDUST Only really coming into the spotlight in her four year old season, Stardust is bred, owned and trained by Flat Creek Racing, and has been a solid competitor in both Feature and non-Feature races, regularly turning in solid performances. A champagne sabino, Stardust is sired by Fritzy, an unraced stud known for producing solid racers, and out of little-known mare In Flight, also unraced.
Stardust showed her worth this season through several outstanding Feature performances, the most noteable being a three-length win in the Open Summer Turf Classic, one of the highlights of the Summer Stakes Carnival. She also contested the Virtuity Treble at the end of the year, running a close second to Animal Kingdom in the Honesty Stakes, the first leg of the Treble, before falling to a disappointing seventh in both the Charity Derby and Hope Plate.
SIRE OF THE YEAR
SPELLBREAKER Standing for his first year at stud this year, Spellbreaker of Flat Creek Racing made a splash on the breeding scene as the new most sought-after stallion around. He was limited to only four foals this season though, all out of some of the best mares around.
Most notably was the cross between him and Autumn Fun of King's Park Racing, a GI-rated racehorse and Hall of Fame inductee - a cross resulting in a chestnut colt promptly named Autumn Spell. Truck Ya of Ferndale Farms was also sent to Spellbreaker, resulting in promising twins named Rude Boy and Don't Speak. A Flat Creek homebred also appeared; Wand Hand, a chestnut tovero filly out of Watch the Clock.
BROODMARE OF THE YEAR
EASTERN ESSENCE Though she wasn't a big hit on the track, Eastern Essence of King's Park Racing has proved she is a winner, so far producing two champion runners and one talented yearling. Her first foal, Eastern Expression (by Sire of the Year, Tambourine) is a multi-Feature winner at only three years old, with many years still ahead of him, while her second foal, Eastern Elements (by well-known stud Alphabetical), is undefeated in her first seven starts as a two year old, which include 4 Feature wins.
The debut of her yearling colt - Evil Essence by Hall of Fame inductee Daemon - for Flat Creek Racing is eagerly awaited by all, and the colt himself shows a lot of promise for the future.
