Feature races run during Spring, Summer and Autumn, in all grades. Most races run independently, as the highlight race of the day, though some run as days of racing. Winning two Features, placing in four, or showing in six, automatically nominates a horse for any year-end awards they may be eligible for, though some awards may require less Feature wins, places or shows. The only other way to be nominated for an award is through player nomination.
Green Isle Cup
Usually run near the beginning of Spring, this day of racing is highlighted with the running of the GIII Green Isle Handicap over a mile and five furlongs, and Open Green Isle Cup over 2 miles. Both of these are distance races and are run on the dirt, and features in other grades are often run on this day.
ADT Triple
The ADT Triple is a set of three races run on a single day in Spring and Summer. All three races are run on the turf and are for sprinters. The first race to run is the ADT Handicap for GIII-level racers, over six furlongs, followed by the seven furlong ADT Sprint over seven furlongs. The day concludes with the GI ADT Cup for the best turf sprinters - and occasionally distance horses - around, testing their skills over a mile.
American Cup Day
The first stop in a talented two year old's rise to the top, the American Cup Day is the first big day of Features, running at the end of Spring. The day is mainly aimed at distance horses on both the dirt and the turf, running in Grade III and Open, with races that aren't Features running for other grades and for sprinters. Two Features for distance two year olds only are run on this day; the American Cup Juvenile on the dirt, and the American Turf Juvenile. These are both run over a mile and seven furlongs, and are usually a good indication of who will be nominated for Champion Two Year Old at the end of the year. These races are followed by two Open races for horses of all ages, the American Cup and American Turf Cup, running on dirt and turf respectively over 2 miles and 2 furlongs. These races are usually taken out by older horses, though it is not unheard of for a two year old to win. You know you have a champion if your two year old can take out both the Juvenile and the Cup. The American Mile is a smaller Feature specifically for GII turf runners. It runs over a mile, a comfortable distance for both sprinters and routers to contest.
Summer Stakes Carnival
The biggest day of racing in the year, the Summer Stakes Carnival runs Feature races for all grades, surfaces and distances as well as non-feature races for horses who aren't able to contest the bigger races.
For sprinters, several smaller Features are run; the GII Summer Mile and Open Summer Oaks on the dirt, and Open Summer Turf Sprint and GIII Run For The Diamonds for two year olds on the turf. GII runners from distance and sprints alike race against each other for the honour of taking out the Summer Mile, the first of two GII Features of the day, while the Summer Oaks and Summer Turf Sprint provide sprinters with a chance to prove themselves worthy of an end-of-year award. The Run For The Diamonds for 2 year old turf sprinters is the GIII pre-requisite for the Run For The Roses, the other GII race of the day, giving turf sprinter two year olds a chance to be considered for Champion Two Year Old.
What is most exciting about the Carnival though, is the distance Features, which begin with the two Juveniles at GIII level for two year olds, continue with the Summer Turf Stakes, and culminate with the Summer Stakes for dirt distance runners. The Juveniles - the Summer Stakes Juvenile on the dirt and Summer Turf Juvenile - are the second and final set of two year old Features for routers. Winners of the American Cup Day juveniles often aim to win these as well for an automatic nomination for Horse of the Year and for the glory that comes to a winner of the double. The Summer Turf Stakes and Summer Stakes are then run for the older racers, and are the two highlights of the day.
Virtue Treble
The Treble is a series of three races on the turf that are run in the Autumn for distance horses, the distance increasing with each race. The Treble is the culmination of the year of racing and the ultimate honour for a horse, the aim being to win all three legs.
The treble begins with the Honesty Stakes, with entrants running a mile and five furlongs, and moves up to a mile and seven with the Charity Derby. The final leg is the Hope Plate, with the distance increasing by three furlongs to two miles and two furlongs. One horse is yet to win all three legs in a single year.
