HORSE OF THE YEAR
CONSTELLATION A newcomer to the track this year, two year old colt Constellation has made a splash in the racing scene, with five wins from his first ten starts. This striking sabino colt is bred and trained by King's Park Racing, and has followed in the footsteps of champion mare Skyward of Flat Creek Racing, winning both the American Cup Juvenile and Summer Stakes Juvenile for dirt distance two year olds. Constellation is a colt by Y3 Horse of the Year Zynco, out of unraced mare ByeByeBirdy, and is a half-brother to Feature winners such as Open At The Close and Fiorion.
CHAMPION TWO YEAR OLD
ASHTAROTH Representing new-comers Red Rock Racing in their first year of racing, Ashtaroth has surprised everyone at the track with outstanding performances in almost all his races, only coming out of the money once in the GIII Stack-Up Stakes. Though he only had two victories this year, this colt has competed in five Feature races and placed in each of them; showing in the American Turf Juvenile and Summer Turf Juvenile for two year olds, as well as in the Summer Turf Classic, an Open Feature. After a disappointing finish in the Stack-Up Stakes, he came back to win the Honesty Stakes, another Open Feature, missed the Charity Derby, and placed in the Hope Plate to finish the year.
CHAMPION THREE YEAR OLD
SAILS ABROAD Taking out the award for the third year in a row, King's Park Racing has returned to the track for another successful year, this time blazing the field with champion distance runner Sails Abroad, last year nominated for Horse of the Year and Champion Two Year Old. Sails Abroad started out this year with a disappointing performance in her first three races before a placing in the Open-rated Trouble Stakes. She did no worse than show for the remainder of the year, with highlights in several Feature races - the American Turf Cup, Summer Turf Classic, Honesty Stakes, Charity Derby, and Hope Plate.
CHAMPION OLDER MALE
CHALLENGER Challenger surpassed all expectations this year with several superb performances in both GII- and Open-rated races. This striking black colt from Flat Creek Racing stepped onto the track for his final racing season as a six year old this year, and did not disappoint, placing in most races to bring his record to 18 wins. He also set a record, with three Feature wins in one year, taking out the Open Summer Turf Classic, and GII Queen's Oaks and American Mile, with a placing in the Honesty Stakes to add to his impressive record. Sadly, this colt did not make it to GI status, and will stand at stud in Y6.
CHAMPION OLDER FEMALE
WINDSONG Six year old distance runner Windsong of King's Park Racing did not compete in any Feature races this year, but had a successful season anyway, only coming out of the money twice. She enjoyed success in three of her seven starts and raced in GII, winning the Affirmed Cup, Defense Stakes and Obtrude Plate, and placing in the Protection Stakes and Phrine Plate.
SIRE OF THE YEAR
ZYNCO This year siring two foals, Zynco's offspring have made a splash on the racing scene this year, with the debut of twin four year olds Magneta and Cobalt of Ferndale Farms and two year olds Constellation of King's Park Racing and Fiorion of Flat Creek Racing. Though Cobalt has yet to achieve anything spectacular, his sister Magneta has had an outstanding year, winning all her starts this year. Constellation also had a good year, winning two Juvenile Features and Horse of the Year, and Fiorion proved himself to be a valuable racer, placing in several Features.
