Selena Hassen and Windsong
Reema knew exactly what was going on as she walked to the track. The filly knew she was going for a run with others, a run that mattered more than the ones that happened in the early mornings, and she was ready for it.
It was about nine in the morning as they walked the two horses to the track; Selena in front with Reema and Darren behind her with Essy. The chestnut filly beside Selena danced from side to side impatiently, spooking at the shadows and cars that passed with high spirits. The black behind them was much calmer, looking around at her surroundings with little interest, as if she had something better to do then be walking along the road.
At the track, Tally and Amy were waiting for them with the gear that they needed. To enter the two horses in the Golden Age Stakes, they were first required to run in one of the trial races that were being held today. Selena didn't know who they would be running against yet, but she was confident that Reema at least was capable of winning; of her thirteen starts, she had only been out of the money once this year. Essy hadn't been so successful; only two wins last year, and none this year.
The horses were saddled quickly, and Selena and Darren changed into their racing silks; Selena in the King's Park colours, and Darren in ones designed by Essy's owners. The trial today was a mile and five furlongs, against three or four horses from other stables, and would be a fast one - the day was clear and warm, and it hadn't rained at all in the last few weeks. There was even a small crowd of owners, other trainers and stablehands and a few other horse racing enthusiasts gathered in the stands, eagerly watching the first trial running.
"Ready to go, Selena?" Tally called, leading Reema out of the stalls. Nodding, Selena waited for Amy and Essy to pass, then followed them out with Darren.
