It was an early way to early for the young owner to be awake. With a groan Lee rolled onto her side and peered at the clock, the red letters burned her eyes. Another groan ripped its way from her throat, 3:30 am. “I don’t wanna get up.” She mumbled into the darkness. “To bad we have to work Demon and Holly today.” Came a voice from the dark, causing Lee to scream. “Damnit Ricky!” Lee growled as she rolled out of bed, ignoring the fact she was in her pajamas. “Out, go get the horses ready.” “Yes Ma’am.” He drawled with a smirk. Lee shot him a withering glare and shoved him out of her bedroom. As much as she disliked it, he was right. It’d been too long since she’d ridden Demon and to be honest, she loved working the horses with her father figure. Heaving a sigh she rushed about to get dressed, the sooner they got out to the track the better.
Once fully dressed and she’d had her morning coffee Lee made her way through the black to the barn where she could see the lights, and a figure moving around. She knew that it was Ricky, for he was the only other nutcase that’d be up at this god forsaken time. Of course there was also the fact she’d told him to go ready the horses. “Damnit Demon!” Ricky scolded the stallion, who in Lees opinion looked rather smug. Chuckling behind her coffee cup Lee raised a brow. “What’d my baby do now?” Her hand was lifted to stroke her black stallions face when he nudged her. “Is he telling lies baby boy?” Lee cooed, knowing it annoyed Ricky how attached she was to her big black stallion. “Oh sure, take his side.” Ricky grumbled as he nursed his injured arm. “Bastard nearly took a chunk out of me.” Demon snorted at that and nudged Lee again. “He says you’re lying just to get him in trouble.” Lee snickered at the pissed look on rickys face. “Come on, we gotta get these guys their work outs.”
Ricky reluctantly agreed and moved towards the much more docile Holly. “You believe me don’t ya Hol?” He mumbled, stroking the roan mares neck. Holly nickered and bobbed her head. “That’s my girl.” Lee rolled her eyes and set her mug on Demons stall before swinging up onto the stallions back. He’d already been groomed and tacked, and waited for Ricky to mount up. “Lies.” She coughed as she nudged Demon into a trot. Lee heard Rickys growl and then the ‘clip’ of Hollys hooves against the concrete as they followed.
“You’d probably say Hardtack was a misunderstood horse too, wouldn’t you? That he wasn’t evil, but a good horse if you got to know him?” Ricky asked as the two trotted alongside each other towards the track. “Yes, I would. There is a reason I say Die is like Hardtack.” Lee replied as the moved past other grooms, horses, and jockeys. Most made a path for the duo, some even stared in awe. Lee rolled her eyes, she’d let her horses take a break from racing and still they caught peoples attention. Look, she is working out Daemon and Hoist the colours, does that mean they’re going to racing again?! She heard one groom whisper to his friend, and Lee had to bite back a snort. Die however was pleased with the wide berth, and tossed his head before his trot turned more into a ‘prance’. “Show off.” Ricky mumbled fondly, causing Lee to smirk. “Come on, lets whip these two into shape.” Ricky nodded his agreeance and the two nudged the thoroughbreds into a canter and out onto the track.
